Karla’s Top Priorities for Colorado Education
Mouse over each priority to learn a bit more
Strong SchoolsAll things to all students? Not on this budget.
We have asked all schools to be all things to all kids without providing the resources necessary to meet families’ needs. We need to increase funding and resources for Colorado schools so our kids get a world-class education.
AccountabilityMeasurement should grow, not punish schools.
I understand the need for measurable standards of success in education, but it is not right to put schools into competition with each other for resources in a zero sum game that worsens unequal instruction and resources.
School SafetyMultiple strategies, multiple stakeholders.
I support a multilateral approach to school safety that keeps our students safe. Arming teachers is not the solution, and we need to work with all stakeholders to solve this problem through positive environments, safety measures, and community involvement.
Academic StandardsRational standards. Reasonable flexibility.
It is important that we have rational standards for what our students need to know to succeed, while also providing the flexibility to address the differences that every child has in their learning experience.
